In the Comics and Media[]

Bane was a boy with no name who was born in the Peña Duro prison, serving his departed father's sentence. At first, a man known as Zombie cared for him at the Peña Duro nursery, and when he was moved with the other prisoners, he was protected by one known as Trogg, until the boy learnt to fend by himself. As an adult, his cellmate Bird talked him about Gotham City and Batman. Despite being in prison, Bane managed to develop extraordinary abilities and have books smuggled into Peña Duro to become a cultured man. The warden noticed Bane's legendary status among the prisoners and forced him to become a test subject for a new verision of the drug "venom" in the hopes of having him killed. Bane survived by sheer willpower, and then he and Zombie faked his death, so he later returned to Peña Duro, freed Bird, Trogg and Zombie, and killed the warden.

Bane went to Gotham City to defeat Batman, since just like Peña Duro, Gotham was "ruled" by a creature of fear, something that fascinates Bane. Bane orchestrates a massive escape from Arkham Asylum so he can study Batman facing his old foes and also get him tired to defeat him. During the proccess, Bane deduces Batman is Bruce Wayne, so he faces the Dark Knight at Wayne Manor, where he defeats his exhausted enemy. However, Bane is defeated some time later by a new Batman.

Bane is Batman's ultimate rival, both in brains and brawn, and just like the Caped Crusader, he has also been considered by Ra's Al Ghul as a possible heir.
