Hunter Zolomon was a friend of Wally West who had lost everything. After he was crippled by Gorilla Grodd, Zolomon went to the Flash Museum and tried to use the Cosmic Treadmill to time travel and undo his tragedies in life, but caused an accident that gave him time-based powers similar to superspeed. Zolomon decided that Wally would be a better hero if he had experienced tragedy like his predecessor Barry Allen, so he became the villain Zoom, a successor to Professor Zoom as the Reverse Flash, to create the tragedy that Wally needed in his life.
